How Safe Is Your Child's College Dorm?

Families ask about tuition, academics, meal plans and housing costs. But before a student moves into a college dorm, there are important questions about safety, security and privacy every family should ask.

Here are 8 questions every parent should ask:

1) Who Can Visit—and When?
As a parent are you aware of the hours during the day or night that young men may be in your daughter's dorm room?

2) What About Your Daughter’s Privacy?
As a parent, are you aware that your daughter’s roommate may have a boy in her room for hours encroaching on your daughter’s privacy and ability to study, change clothes, etc?

3) Who Is Supervising the Dorm?
Are parents aware that most dormitories do not have a Dorm Mother, only a  RA , who is also a student.

4) How Long Can Guests Stay?
Are parents aware that  their daughter's  roommate may have a person of the opposite sex visiting in her dorm  room for extended hours at a time...morning through early morning (2:00 a.m.) of the next day on the weekends and late night during the week? Check your school for its exact hours.

5) What Is Happening in Shared Bathrooms?
Are parents aware that empty boxes of pregnancy-tests and empty morning- after pill boxes are often in the girls’ bathrooms?

6) What Is the School Providing or Promoting?
Are parents aware that some universities actually advertise for and give away prophylactics FREE to freshmen girls encouraging immorality.

7) Who Has Access to Women’s Restrooms?
Where do these boys go to the restroom?  Are they in the restrooms while girls are taking showers?!

8) Does the College Have a Curfew?
Are parents aware that most colleges no longer have curfews for freshman students?

Don't assume. Ask questions. Get the facts. Know what protections are in place.
