Why are sorority houses SAFER for women students than dormitories on our state campuses?

The Safe Dormitories Association is an organization of Mississippi citizens who are deeply concerned that all our state universities allow men students to spend long unsupervised hours in the women’s dormitory rooms---their bedrooms---and vice versa for the men’s dormitory rooms.

Girls who live in sorority houses are protected from the intrusion of boys in their rooms. They are safe! Why are girls in the dormitories not protected from this dangerous intrusion of boys also?

Until the 1970’s the girls in dormitories were protected from assaults by rules that boys were never allowed in the girls’ dormitory rooms for any reason unless they were moving furniture, luggage, or another legitimate purpose. Boys were not allowed to stay in the room for any length of time beyond their specific errand.

There are no societal benefits to this open dormitory policy, and many students, mostly freshman girls in their first semester, are often raped in these open dorms, so what are the benefits of the open dorm policy? The answer is “none.”

There is not one benefit to the existing policy of allowing boys into the girls’ bedrooms. Does having a boy in the room for long hours help a girl study? Where does a girl or her roommate change clothes? How can her roommate study with a boy in the room? How can she put on her pajamas or go to sleep with a boy in the room?

Parents do not pay for a boy to be in the room with their daughter’s roommate. This is a violation of an innocent roommate’s rights.

Sorority girls who live in their sorority house are safe. Their daddies can afford to keep them safe. The State of Mississippi requires freshman girls to live in dorms, where sexual assaults are not prevented: indeed, the state is complicit in the rapes that occur.

The Board of the Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) could stop it, but they do not. The Mississippi legislature could stop it, too, but does not.

Studies show that 81% of all assaults on college campuses occur in the girls’ dormitory rooms—the girls’ bedrooms! (Professor Andrea Curcio, Georgia State University, The Conversation, April 6, 2016)

Studies also show that 90% of the assaults are not reported! (National Sexual Violence Resource Center) These assaults are shrouded in secrecy and shame, so most are not reported.

These assaults in the college dormitories can easily be prevented, but the administrations, the IHL, and the Mississippi legislature have done nothing to prevent these assaults, and they all know the problem. The Clery Report must be filed every year documenting where assaults occur, so those in authority know---all of them.

Another reason all these people in authority know about the problem is that our organization has made every effort to inform them.

We had a beautifully written bill to solve the problem requiring little expense—keep the boys out of the girls’ dorm rooms and vice versa.

We are grateful to the ladies who introduced our bill in the Senate and House---Senator Hill (SB 2218-Hill) and Representative Hobgood-Wilkes (HB 1605-Hobgood-Wilkes)

Our bill died in committee in both houses of the legislature. Why?!

Help us and join the fight to restore decency and safety to our Mississippi dormitories. Help us protect our young people who are just leaving the safety of their homes. Young men are also endangered by this existing permissive policy. They can have their reputations damaged for life by a false accusation of wrongdoing.
